This comes after the killing of a prominent Maronite Christian politician, where blame was placed on Syrians.
This has been inflicted by the Lebanese Forces. This is largely happening in Christian neighbourhoods.
Vile and ugly to scapegoat refugees, especially since Lebanese and Syrians are basically the same people. It’s sad when people internalise differences imposed upon them by the colonisers, and then inflict violence upon the most vulnerable.
In the 80s, these same Maronite elements blamed and scapegoated Palestinians. Now it’s Syrians. There are 2 million Syrian refugees in Lebanon, which is a small and economically precarious nation, with many challenges tied to this. But racism is never the answer.
